particularly , dokuryu , who came to nagasaki in 1653 , was a learned person and skillful calligrapher who had already achieved fame in his home country . とりわけ承応2年（1653年）、長崎に渡来した独立 (禅僧)は学識深く、書を巧みとし、本国にいたときから著名であった。
it is said that yoshihisa had not just wisdom and courage , but also he was also a learned person , having , for example , received lectures on the kokin-shu (a collection of waka poems ) from yusai hosokawa , and maitained close relations with sakihisa konoe , a chief adviser to the emperor . 義久は智勇に優れていただけではなく、細川幽斎から古今伝授を受けたり、関白・近衛前久との親交が厚かったなど、教養人でもあったと言われている。
there was another description , reading as ' kirino should be called a man of integrity , valiant and fearless with an unyielding spirit . he is the most merciful , but poorly educated and called himself an illiterate . but once he is in duty , he becomes an able commander with prudence , even superior to the learned person .' また同書には、「桐野は廉潔剛胆百折不撓の人というべし。最も慈悲心あり。文識はなはだ乏し。自ら文盲を唱う。しかりといえども実務上すこぶる思慮深遠、有識者に勝れり」ともある。
